About Grinn Arts & Design

Largs is a beautiful seaside town on the West coast of Scotland, awash with creators and creative arts enthusiasts!

Kate searched Scotland for several year for exactly this ~ a place to showcase the makes of Scottish artists, artisans and designers and a place to host creative events ~ and in 2025, when the perfect venue became available, Grinn Arts&Design came to be!

From Mackintosh to McQueen, Scottish designers and artists have had, and continue to have, a huge impact on hearts and minds around the world.  You'll find just a wee bit of this extraordinary heritage at Grinn.

About Kate

Grinn Arts and Design Scotland 8_edited.

Born in Canada to a family with Scottish roots, and now based in Largs (Scotland), Kate has been a creative for over 45 years.

Growing up in Canada, Kate's parents were both artistic, and art & design very much ran in the family:  Kate's father was a cartographer and Kate's mother was a graphic designer.   Kate and her sister were both encouraged to be creative and artistic from a very young age, and both won numerous arts competitions as children.  As a teenager, Kate spent her spare time sketching, developing her photography skills, and wanting to be an architect ‘when she grew up’.  (Kate was regularly told off by her English teacher for having notebooks full of floorplans, rather than ‘notes’ in English class – but she won the award for the highest English grade in her final year anyway!)   Deterred by the mathematics requirements needed for a career in Architecture, Kate went on to study Humanities and Business at University in Canada and in Finland – with a special interest in product design, packaging design, ergonomics and advertising design.   She then moved to the UK and after an award-winning career in business, she then became a lecturer at College and University level.  Eventually her passions, skills and knowledge merged together within an online education business focused on secondary-level education and the Arts.

Kate has organized and run hundreds of classes, courses and workshops in Art&Design, on topics ranging from Christopher Wren to Sustainable Design.  Kate has been an amateur artist and photographer for over 4 decades, and an educator for more than 15.  She's passionate about sustainability, creativity and community.
